A Poem for My Teachers in Hawaii

The weekend of October 21–23, 2016, I was in Hana on the island of Maui, in Hawaii, for a retreat with three Polynesian elders and 11 other now-dear brothers and sisters. From the elders we received direct and powerful transmissions of embodied wisdom. Many of the experiences were, for me, initiations into a greater conscious communion with the land and the living elements.

As a result, it has become clear beyond doubt that I am in partnership with the ‘āina (land), the people, the plants, the animals, the spirits, and the subtle beings of Hawaii. I know and can now declare that these islands are home for the next chapter of my life.

The retreat was organized by Puente Guidance, an organization that brings together artists, scientists, and spiritual warriors to learn from one another and build bridges of awareness, understanding, and love. During our time together, we were held in sacred embrace by the luminous Ala Kukui retreat center (the name means “path of enlightenment”), which I have found to be an ideal place for the deepest spiritual work.

After the retreat, I sat down before dawn to express appreciation to my elders, to my friends, and to all of the sacred beings, both visible and invisible, that touched me so deeply. All are my teachers. The following poem came. Somehow the words holographically represent the totality of the teachings that I received.

The day coalesces between sky and sea
    – words forming on a cosmic tongue of fire…
The sun leaps triumphantly
    above the horizon!

A new stanza of radiance,
        of healing, spills forth
    in the language of Light.
The unbroken
    vow is thus reiterated,
        in sacred Lineage:

Every wave and wind speaks Truth. Be humble! Pay attention!
The currents never repeat. Respect life! Love all!

Listen. And forgive.

The gentle wind is pleasant to the skin.

  1. Chris – I have been in touch with Pat Field every since he and my daughter (your friend and admirer) met at Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. He told me of Hana, Maui that he was soon to visit (truly, a magical place). I spent time there in the late 1960s and early 1970s, enjoying the black sand beaches, the series of waterfalls, dawn on the top of Haleakala, and more. What a reconnection for me, and, hopefully, more in the future. Joe
